Traditional Old Fashioned

A timeless classic. This Traditional Old Fashioned is balanced, smooth, and rich, bourbon complemented by aromatic bitters and a touch of sugar, finished with a bright orange twist. Perfect for golden hour at home.

Recipe Card

Ingredients

  • 2oz (60ml) bourbon, rye or wheated both work
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 0.25oz (7.5ml) demerara syrup
  • Orange peel, for garnish
  • 1 large clear ice cube

Method

  1. Add bourbon, syrup, and bitters to a mixing glass with ice. Stir for 25 to 30 seconds until well chilled.
  2. Strain into a rocks glass over one large clear ice cube.
  3. Express the orange peel over the drink, then garnish with the peel twist on the rim.
  4. Sip and enjoy, serve immediately.

Tip: Use a quality demerara syrup for deeper caramel notes. Chill your glass beforehand for best results.

Variations

  • Rye Old Fashioned. Swap the bourbon for rye. The drink turns drier and spicier, and the orange still sings.
  • Maple Old Fashioned. Use maple syrup in place of demerara for a rounder, autumn leaning sweetness.

Questions

What bourbon is best for an Old Fashioned?

Any bourbon you enjoy drinking straight. A higher proof bourbon stands up to dilution, and a wheated bourbon makes a softer drink. The classic spec works across the shelf.

Sugar cube or syrup?

Syrup mixes evenly and never leaves grit in the last sip. If you love the ritual of the cube, muddle it with the bitters and a few drops of water until it fully dissolves.
